How It Works

What Makes Self-Regulating Heat Trace Cable Different?

1

Semiconductive Polymer Core

Two parallel bus wires are embedded in a carbon-impregnated polymer core. This core is the heating element — its molecular structure changes with temperature to control electrical resistance and heat output.

2

Automatic Temperature Adjustment

When the surrounding temperature drops, the polymer contracts, forming more conductive pathways and increasing heat output. When it warms up, the polymer expands and reduces output, automatically, along every inch of cable.

3

Safe, Efficient, Cut-to-Length

Self-regulating cable can be cut to any length in the field, safely overlapped without burning out, and delivers heat only where and when it's needed, reducing energy waste compared to constant wattage systems.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Collapsible content

What is self-regulating heat trace cable?

The cable automatically increases or decreases its heat output as the
surrounding temperatures changes. A thermostat or controller may still be
recommended to shut the system off when heat isn't needed and to reduce energy
consumption.

How do I know which cable is right for my project?

It comes down to your application, wattage need, voltage, and installation environment. Standard polyolefin-jacketed cable covers most residential and commercial projects; fluoropolymer or HazLoc-rated cable is the call for chemical exposure, corrosive atmospheres, or classified hazardous locations. Not sure where you land? Answer a few quick questions above and we'll point you to the right product.

How does FloTrace compare to brands like Raychem or Thermon?

FloTrace cable is built to the same UL 515 standard and carries the same certifications as the major brands. The difference is how it's sold — brands like Raychem and Thermon go through distributors who mark up the price before it reaches you. FloTrace sells direct, so you're paying for the cable, not the supply chain.

Do you offer free samples, and what are your shipping and warranty terms?

Yes — you can request a free 1-foot sample of any cable before committing to a full spool. Every FloTrace cable ships with a 10-year manufacturer warranty, orders over $1,000 qualify for free shipping, and orders placed before 2 PM EST ship the same day.
